My new nephew...

Starting early with the sports gear!!! Jacob is just adorable, and it sounds like he is a good baby! Congrats, Chad and Jennifer!!! We love you all!!!

Chad--if you are reading this...Robb is extremely impressed with the KU gear (not!) :)

First trip to the "beach"!

Today we went with my parents to a little beach area under the Sewall's Point bridge for a "Mother's Day" picnic. My mom and dad brought KFC chicken and side dishes, and we brought drinks...and one cute baby! We had a really nice, relaxing time! This was the first time we've tried to take her out to the beach. Where we went today was perfect, because there was a nice non-sandy place to keep her stroller, play gym, etc., and that made clean up much better, especially since Mom, Payton, and I had to be ready for the Mother/Daughter Banquet in the evening. (I'll post pictures of that later.) We also had nice shade for her, which was great.

Robb and Payton enjoyed a little nap...

She doesn't usually even take her pacifier, much less sleep with it, but I thought this picture was so cute!

I took blankets to provide padding for her play gym. It worked out perfectly to set it up under the little pavilion, and she had a great time! She really enjoys being outside.

We helped her "dangle" her feet in the ocean water for the first time! She really liked it. She kept pushing her feet down into the sand...definitely something new she wanted to explore!

Even with her legs stretched all the way out, she still has plenty of "rolls"! I love it!

Welcome, Jacob!

I have a new nephew!!! Jacob Ryan Waits was born yesterday, May 8th, at 7:52 a.m. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces. They measured him at 18 inches, but my brother and sister-in-law are pretty sure he is longer than that. We are so excited to add another "little person" to the "Waits" family! The only bad thing is that I have to wait till July 2nd to see him! Below is a quick picture my brother took on his phone, so it isn't super clear. I'll post more when we get them.

Welcome, little Jacob! We love you very, very much!

Video of Payton's first three months...

My sister-in-law, Mary Ellen, put together this video of Payton's first three months. (Thank you, Mary! I know this must have taken a lot of time, and I really, really appreciate your thoughtfulness!)I really enjoyed seeing the progression of pictures...I can't believe how fast she is growing! Get out your tissues, friends...the song is so sweet!

Cousins...

I was just reading my cousin's (Misty Peterson) blog, and found the pictures of Payton, Wyatt, and Kara from last Sunday. I just had to "steal" them! This was Kara's first Sunday at church, and we had a big family dinner at my mom's. It was nice to have so many of us together! (We missed you, Aunt Bennie!)

Kara- 1 week, Wyatt- almost 1 month, Payton- 3 months

Yes, that is my daughter looming large over her "little" cousins! It looks like Payton and Wyatt are in a fist fight! It won't be long before these three will be running and playing together. I'm so glad to have family (on both sides) close by for Payton to "grow up" with!!!

Pictures from our weekend...

Saturday was a really fun family day. A couple of weeks ago, we received a very nice gift from the family of one of my students, but it was too small for Payton. So, we went to Worth Avenue on Palm Beach Island to take care of these returns, at Neiman Marcus (or needless mark-up, as Robb calls it!) and Juicy Couture. (for those that may be interested, we exchanged the too-small clothes for an ADORABLE white eyelet dress with a big pink bow on the shoulder...perfect for this summer!) These are not our usual places to shop, so this was kind of fun and interesting! After that, we went to Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. It is basically a long strip (ending at the ocean) of little shops and interesting restaurants. A long time ago, we drove past it on our way home from a weekend trip to Ft. Lauderdale. At the time, we thought it looked like a fun "day trip", but just never went back. It was a really great choice for this weekend. Payton LOVES her stroller, and really enjoyed the time playing and looking around. And we enjoyed the time spent together, just taking it easy!

Payton relaxing in her stroller!

Robb and Payton on the beach...we didn't really "go" to the beach, as we didn't go prepared for a beach day, but we wanted to see what it looked like. At this beach, you can rent nice, padded beach chairs. Sounds relaxing, but not terribly so with a baby! She likes to keep moving!

No smile this time...too close to dinner time!

Sunday after church...from this picture, it looks like this Mommy needs a nap! (out of the ones we took, it was the best one of Payton, so I posted it...not the best picture of me, though!)

Sunday night after church, Payton got the giggles for the first time! It was SO cute! Robb and I were laughing so hard we were crying; I was trying to video, and it turned out quite shaky, as I was laughing so much. Robb went to put her pj's on her and started playing with her. She just laughed and laughed.

However, this is all following a ridiculous night at church. After the 3rd trip out of the service, we just went home. (I'm sure no one else ever did this, and I know it may not be the "right" thing to do, but I just didn't have the energy to keep trying after a busy Sunday and facing a busy week.) If anyone has any really good suggestions for getting a busy 3-month-old to sleep in church, I am open for ideas! I told Robb that everyone at Hobe Sound Bible Church probably thinks she is a terribly fussy baby! She really isn't at all. The only time she fusses is when she is getting sleepy and needing a nap...which consistently happens during church. I thought this would be a good thing, but it is proving quite difficult. At home, we just lay her down and she goes to sleep, but at church, there is too much going on, and she is too curious (and a little stubborn, I think!) to just quietly close her eyes...HELP!!!

Today was my first day back at "work." I have really been dreading it so very, very much. I feel like the worst mother ever to leave her (I know it's not true, it just feels like it!), but it's what we really need to do right now. Thank you to my friends and family who prayed for me...we both had a good morning. I am so thankful for several things:

1. I have family to leave her with (thank you, Bianca and Mary Ellen!)
2. I only have to go four mornings a week, and am home by 12:30
3. I only miss a couple of hours with her; the rest of the time she is sleeping, since she doesn't wake up until at least 9:00 a.m. and goes back down at 11:00 for her morning nap.
4. The time goes by very quickly at school, as I am very busy.

If you made it to the end of this long blog, thanks for "listening" and have a great week!

I thought this was good for the soul...

Someone forwarded this to me, and I thought it was too sweet to not share! I think we've all come across people like the lady in the story...unfortunately I've not always treated them like this little boy did...

Last week, I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, 'God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen! ' Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, 'That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!'

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, 'Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?' As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, 'I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer. ''Really?' my son asked. 'Cross my heart,' the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), 'Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.'

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, 'Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.'
